Antique Atlas with 42 Maps. Large Folio. Complete! 1824
Magnificent antique atlas with 42 large-folio mapscomplete! This volume was published in France in 1824; it is very well preserved and features all the original engravings. A few maps have restorations along the edges, but these are few and far between: most are in good condition. The maps are printed in black and white, with some details (such as national borders) highlighted in beautiful colours. All of them feature cartouches bearing the inscription Dressé par A. LAPIE Geográphe.
The atlas includes two world maps (one of them a physical map, drawn using the Mercator projection), a map of the planetary systems, and engravings of various countries and continents, as well as an index of tables. The atlas has its original covers, lined with dark green watermark paper and slightly worn. However, the binding remains intact and perfectly fulfils its role of containing and protecting this magnificent collection of maps, which is nearly 200 years old.
It is very rare to find a complete atlas. They usually have missing pages, since some of the maps command very high prices and there are unscrupulous sellers who sell them separately. I find this intolerable, so I would truly appreciate it if whoever acquires this atlas does so with the intention of keeping it complete.
As it stands, its already an excellent investment: as a reference, the two world maps it includes would be valued at around 250300 euros each. The map of the planetary systems is also highly valuable and could sell for around 200250 euros. The rest of the maps (39 maps, not counting that some span two pages) are valued at about 100150 euros each. Therefore, if sold separately, they could fetch a total of about 4,5005,000 euros. But I am an antiquities lover and I refuse to do this: it is very rare to find a complete antique atlas. I would ask the future owner to preserve it just as it is, complete.
This wonderful, complete atlas with 42 large folio-sized maps is a collectors item, worthy of a place in a great historical library or documentary archive.
