Antique G&T Monarch Senior Special Luxury Gramophone-Phonograh, France circa 1907

Exceptional antique gramophone or phonograph, model Monarch Senior Special, manufactured by Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd., the French branch of the famous brand that would later adopt the name His Master’s Voice. This piece, dated around 1907, represents one of the pinnacles of early 20th-century European mechanical phonography, both for its aesthetic refinement and for its first-class acoustic engineering.

The gramophone is built on a solid oak case, richly hand-carved along its entire perimeter with floral motifs and deep mouldings, evoking the presentation models intended for the high bourgeoisie of the Belle Époque. On the top rests the original metal turntable, still covered with its period felt, deliberately preserved for its excellent functional condition and historical value.

The internal mechanism is a true marvel: a high-power triple-spring motor, capable of providing extended playing time and steady drive with all types of records, fitted with gilt brass barrels, a feature exclusive to the earliest versions. Later versions replaced these gilt barrels with silvered finishes, making this model particularly sought after by collectors.

Its large rear metal horn, black with fine gilt stripes and restored respecting the original design, delivers a surprisingly clear and powerful projection. This model belongs to the transition between front and rear horns and even retains the original side fitting that allowed the mounting of a front horn in earlier configurations.

The apparatus has been fully restored mechanically, adjusted, and calibrated for perfect operation. It retains all its original parts, including the nickel-plating, the decal, and even the original Exhibition soundbox, also fully serviced with new rubbers and a thorough cleaning. Thanks to this, its sound is firm, brilliant, and surprisingly loud even to modern ears.

The Monarch Senior Special was conceived as the flagship of Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd.’s luxury range, reserved for high-end clients and institutions that wished to showcase the most advanced sound technology of their time. Its powerful presence and perfect sound made it a symbol of status and sophistication. It was not merely a musical device, but a work of applied engineering and art, the centre of family and social gatherings during the Belle Époque.

A luxury piece in its day, this Monarch Senior Special is today a testimony to the technical and artistic splendour of G&T. For its condition, rarity, and sound quality, it is an excellent investment for demanding collectors and lovers of the history of sound. It would look magnificent in a classical or eclectic interior, adding character, presence, and conversation to any space.

It is not just a historical piece, but a gateway to the past. This Monarch Senior Special allows one to relive the excitement of those days when music filled the room with the purity of mechanical sound. Listening to it today is to feel again the magic of another era, when every note was an event and silence was broken with wonder and admiration.

History of His Master’s Voice

The history of His Master’s Voice begins in the final years of the 19th century, when Emile Berliner, inventor of the flat disc and the gramophone, founded the Berliner Gramophone Company in 1895. In 1899, the company was reorganised in London as The Gramophone Company Ltd., and shortly afterwards, after expanding into typewriter manufacturing, adopted the name Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd. (G&T). It was during this period, between 1900 and 1909, that the highest-quality gramophones were produced, including the famous Monarch Senior, intended for the most distinguished clientele.

The French branch, based in Paris, played a decisive role in the European expansion of the brand. There, versions with more artistic finishes were designed, such as carved oak cases and elaborately decorated metal horns, aimed at the luxury market. In 1909, the company dropped the “Typewriter” reference to focus on phonography and adopted its definitive name: His Master’s Voice, inspired by Francis Barraud’s famous painting depicting the dog Nipper listening to his master’s voice from a gramophone.

The 1907 Monarch Senior Special thus represents one of the last jewels of the G&T era before HMV. Its triple motor, high-end construction, and transitional design towards rear-horn models mark a key moment in the evolution of domestic phonography. Today, these pieces feature in the most important collections in Europe and America, valued not only for their beauty but also for their role in the history of recorded sound.
