Antique album with photos of Egypt and the Suez Canal by Zangaki, c. 1890

This beautiful vintage album, created around 1890, contains an extraordinary collection of eight original albumen prints signed by the renowned Zangaki brothers. It is a photographic record of great documentary and aesthetic value depicting Egypt and the construction of the Suez Canal in the second half of the 19th century. The Zangakis, Greek photographers based in Egypt, masterfully captured landscapes, everyday scenes, portraits, and architectural features of the country during a period of profound transformation, when the Canal was establishing itself as a crucial hub of global trade.

Each image, with its characteristic sepia tone, evokes a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the romantic exoticism of nineteenth-century travel. These prints were produced using the albumen process-the most widespread photographic technique of the nineteenth century-in which paper was sensitized with egg white and silver salts to achieve finely detailed images. The result is a soft texture with warm highlights that captures the light in an enveloping way. The sharpness, the framing, and the original signature on the negative make each of these works a unique piece of art.

The album retains its original brown leather binding with a reinforced spine and corners, all in very good condition despite having endured more than 130 years. On the cover, the word "VIEWS" in gold lettering announces the contents: a window into late-19th-century Egypt. Inside, the watermarked paper lining the endpapers adds a touch of refined elegance, typical of luxury editions of the era. Each photograph measures 27 x 22 cm and is mounted on stiff boards. In addition to the main images, the album includes a montage featuring an engraving of the Suez Canal and geographical depictions of the area.

This photographic collection not only captivates with its aesthetic appeal but also offers a visual journey steeped in history. Port scenes from Port Said, ships passing through the canal, railway stations, ethnic portraits, and caravans in the desert come together to form a complete and evocative narrative. Some images also depict the region's urban and technological development during the height of the colonial era. Its rarity, renowned authorship, and excellent state of preservation make this album a highly desirable item for collectors of vintage photography, historians, and lovers of Orientalism.

An exceptional work that will add character and depth to any specialized library, study, or cabinet of curiosities. It is also perfect as part of a historical or travel photography collection, or as an investment in the growing market for vintage photography collecting.

A unique opportunity to acquire an authentic visual record of 19th-century Egypt.

Dimensions: 41 x 36 cm (16.14 x 14.17 in).

History of the Zangaki Brothers

The Zangaki brothers, Constantin and George, of Greek origin, were among the most prolific and renowned photographers working in Egypt during the final decades of the 19th century. It is known that they began working around 1870 and remained active until the late 1890s. Their photographic studio was based primarily in Cairo and Port Said, from where they undertook trips to capture panoramic views, monuments, portraits, and scenes of everyday Egyptian life.

Their work stands out for its technical quality and for the ethnographic and documentary nature of their images. Unlike other photographers of the time, who focused exclusively on monuments and ruins, the Zangakis incorporated a rich variety of human scenes into their work: street vendors, caravans, women, children, and workers on the Suez Canal, making their photographs unique testimonies to a society in transition.

Their images were highly prized among European and American travelers exploring the Middle East and were often sold in the form of albums such as the one presented here. Many of their works were also sold in Egypt's major bookstores and photography studios. Today, his photographs are part of major collections and museums around the world, including the Getty Museum and the U.S. Library of Congress.

The technique he used-albumen on paper-allowed him to produce images of remarkable sharpness, with rich tonal gradations and a soft finish that has aged gracefully. Their style combines romantic exoticism with a realistic and respectful sensibility, which has earned them a prominent place in the history of 19th-century photography. Their works continue to be studied and appreciated by both art historians and collectors of vintage photography.
