USA. Antique Civil War Cavalry Saber. Model 1860. ADK. 1862
Important and highly sought-after regulation Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber used by the Union Army during the American Civil War. Manufactured in 1862 by the prestigious Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, this example retains all original military markings, its guard serial number, and its corresponding scabbard, forming a fully authentic and highly collectible set within 19th-century American historical arms.
The blade shows the elegant curvature characteristic of the model, with a wide fuller and a clean, well-preserved appearance. One side is clearly marked “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS”, while the other bears the regulation marking “U.S. / A.D.K. / 1862”, corresponding to ordnance inspector Andrew D. King, documented during the conflict. The steel is in excellent condition, showing minimal wear and a patina consistent with age, without aggressive interventions.
The grip retains its original leather covering with twisted wire binding, firm and even, providing both authentic appearance and solid handling. The brass guard retains its serial number “11149”, reinforcing its identification as an officially issued military weapon. The overall impression is one of strength and balance typical of sabers designed for mounted combat.
The sword is accompanied by its original metal scabbard, also marked “ADK”, confirming the historical coherence of the set. The scabbard is very well preserved, showing only light wear consistent with age and use.
Model 1860 sabers manufactured by Ames represent one of the most iconic weapons of the American Civil War. Complete examples with clear markings, identified inspector and original scabbard are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such well-preserved condition.
A particularly attractive piece due to its full military authenticity, clear regulation markings and excellent overall state. A rare, historic and highly desirable example within the international collecting field of military edged weapons.
Measurements: 103 cm (40.5 in). Blade: 88 cm (34.6 in).
History of the Model 1860 Saber
The Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber was the primary edged weapon used by mounted Union Army units during the American Civil War. Designed as an evolution of earlier European models, it offered improved lightness and maneuverability suited to modern 19th-century combat tactics.
The Ames Manufacturing Company was one of the principal federal contractors, producing large quantities of arms to high industrial standards. Inspector marks such as those of Andrew D. King ensured official military acceptance within the ordnance system.
Today, these sabers are key historical artifacts for understanding United States military history and are highly valued by collectors, museums and institutions.
