Spain. Antique Zoomorphic Fish Shaped Folding Knife. Toledo, 19th C.
Exceptional and extraordinarily rare antique Spanish folding knife attributable to Toledo production of the 19th century, conceived with a singular zoomorphic morphology imitating the form of a fish. It is a piece of great historical, artistic and typological interest within the collecting field of traditional Spanish folding knives.
The blade presents an undulating or flamboyant profile, coherent with the overall formal conception, reinforcing the symbolic and aesthetic idea of the animal motif. It is made of forged steel and decorated through acid engraving with bullfighting scenes and stylised vegetal motifs, an iconographic repertoire characteristic of Spain in the 19th century.
The handle, equally sinuous, is covered with horn scales carefully burin engraved to form fish scales, generating an organic texture of notable artisanal quality. Various brass elements integrated into the structure evoke the fins of the fish, reinforcing the sculptural character of the piece. The rear terminal adopts a stylised caudal form, while the fish shaped head at the opposite end completes the coherence of the zoomorphic design.
The locking system with spring and ferrule functions correctly, ensuring blade stability in the open position. The piece is preserved in excellent overall condition, with homogeneous wear consistent with its age and full structural integrity.
Due to its dimensions, rarity and ornamental richness, this folding knife belongs to the group of large scale examples probably intended for representational or prestige uses rather than everyday utilitarian functions.
A piece of extraordinary typological rarity, notable ethnographic value and strong visual impact.

History of Toledo Folding Knives
During the 19th century, Toledo maintained its reputation as one of the principal centres of edged weapon production in Spain, inheriting a metallurgical tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Although the city is internationally known for its swords, the manufacture of folding knives also constituted a significant sector of its artisanal activity.
Toledo folding knives combined solid functionality with a rich aesthetic dimension, reflecting both the technical skill of craftsmen and the cultural tastes of Spanish society of the period. The presence of engraved decoration, bullfighting motifs or fantastic formal solutions corresponds to a production oriented not only towards practical use but also towards display, social symbolism and the early collecting market.
During this period, large scale and singularly designed models emerged, among which folding knives with undulating forms or zoomorphic inspiration stand out as exceptional pieces within the traditional repertoire. These creations reflect the capacity of Spanish workshops to integrate technique, imagination and ornamental sensibility.
Today, antique Toledo folding knives of extraordinary typology are highly valued on the international market for their rarity, artisanal quality and importance as material testimonies of Spanish culture of the 19th century.
