Spain. Antique Sword for Spanish Security Corps. Model 1906

Interesting and rather uncommon regulation sword intended for the Spanish Security Corps, corresponding to the model introduced in 1906. This is a weapon conceived specifically for public order duties, clearly reflected both in the design of the blade and in the configuration of its guard and overall structure. The piece is preserved complete, with its original leather scabbard and belt hanger, forming a coherent and highly representative ensemble of this type of historical police armament.

The guard is made of brass, with a simple cross-shaped structure formed by two unequal quillons curved in opposite directions. This solution provides effective protection without adding unnecessary bulk. The grip is curved, with a clearly ergonomic intention, made of walnut wood and composed of two scales fixed by visible metal rivets. Near the pommel there is the characteristic rectangular slot intended for the attachment of the safety strap, a functional detail typical of regulation weapons intended for active service.

The blade is straight and features a ricasso at its base. It shows a squared spine on its inner face and a false edge on the outer face, ending in a rounded tip. This configuration demonstrates its specific use in crowd control and disturbance containment duties, as it was conceived to reduce the risk of serious injury during public order operations. At the base of the blade appears the inscription “ARTILLERIA FABRICA DE TOLEDO”, a mark of origin that reinforces its regulation character and historical interest within Spanish state production.

The scabbard is made of leather, with gilded metal throat and chape. It shows normal signs of use and age consistent with its functional history, while maintaining good structural integrity. The ensemble also includes the belt hanger, an essential element for regulation carry, which adds both practical and collecting value.

The sword is presented complete and in very good overall condition, with no visible modern interventions that might alter its authenticity. The materials retain their historical coherence and structural functionality. This is a piece that fits particularly well within collections of militaria, police history, or Spanish regulation weaponry.

A relatively uncommon piece on the market due to its specific role within public order armament. It stands out for its functional design and for retaining its original scabbard and belt hanger. Its origin from the Toledo Arms Factory enhances its appeal to specialized collectors.

Measurements: 85 cm (33.46 in). Blade: 69.5 cm (27.36 in).

History of the Model 1906 Security Corps Sword

The regulation sword model introduced in 1906 was conceived to equip the agents of the then-named Security Corps, an institution responsible for public order duties in urban environments. Unlike traditional military weapons, this sword was specifically designed for police tasks, which explains the absence of an effective cutting edge and the presence of a rounded tip. These features aimed to reduce the weapon’s lethality without compromising its usefulness in deterrence or control actions.

Its manufacture was entrusted to the Toledo Arms Factory, a state institution with a long tradition in the production of regulation edged weapons for the army and security forces. This centre, heir to the historic manufacture of Toledo swords, adapted its processes to the needs of modern administration, producing standardized and functional weapons.

During the early decades of the twentieth century, these swords formed part of the regular equipment of agents, both on foot and mounted. After the proclamation of the Second Republic, they continued to be used within police units, including the companies of the so-called Assault Groups, which assumed specialized public order duties. Over time, the evolution of police means and the progressive replacement by more modern weapons and equipment led to their withdrawal, making surviving examples today material testimonies of a specific stage in Spanish institutional history.
