Spain. Antique Shell Guard Sword. Solid Silver Hilt. Sicily Toledo, c.1735

Magnificent antique shell guard sword distinguished by the elegance of its design and the quality of the materials used in its construction. The hilt is entirely made of solid silver and bears hallmarks of the Kingdom of Sicily used in the city of Messina during the first half of the 18th century. At that time, the Kingdom of Sicily formed part of the territories governed by the Spanish Crown, which fully explains the historical coherence between the manufacture of the hilt and the origin of the blade. The helical grip, with deep fluting and a bulbous pommel, shows a careful and well balanced execution. The shell guard, with curved knuckle bow and firm structural elements, is well proportioned and provides both visual and functional solidity to the whole.

The blade, made of steel, is a high quality Toledo production and bears the inscription IN TOLEDO on both sides, clearly engraved and well preserved. Its silhouette is slender and perfectly balanced, with a longitudinal fuller in the first quarter designed to lighten the weapon without compromising its strength, continuing in a crisp and well defined triangular section towards the tip. The steel is in excellent condition.

The sword retains its original scabbard, a particularly valued element in antique weapons. The locket and chape are made of silvered metal, well integrated with the overall design and in harmony with the general aesthetic of the piece. The scabbard body shows normal signs of use and age, adding authenticity without diminishing its appeal.

Overall, the sword presents an excellent state of preservation. The rarity of silver hilts in swords of this period makes it a particularly sought after piece among collectors. The quality of the Toledo blade reinforces its historical and technical value within European antique arms. Its remarkable condition and strong historical coherence make it a distinguished addition to any edged weapons collection.

A truly uncommon sword due to its solid silver hilt and authentic Toledo blade, a piece that stands out on its own within any serious collection.

Measurements. Total length 95 cm 37.40 in. Blade length 78 cm 30.71 in.

History of the swords of the Kingdom of Sicily in the Spanish context

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Kingdom of Sicily formed part of the political structure of the Spanish Monarchy, maintaining its own institutional identity while remaining under the sovereignty of the same monarch. This situation generated an intense circulation of artistic models, craft techniques and prestige objects between the different territories governed by the Crown. Edged weapons, especially high quality swords, clearly reflect this historical phenomenon.

Sicily possessed a notable silversmith tradition, particularly in cities such as Messina, where refined production in noble metals developed. The making of solid silver hilts for prestigious weapons responded both to functional criteria and to the need to represent social status. These hilts could be combined with blades from specialised centres within the Spanish territories, with Toledo being the most prestigious due to the quality of its steel and the consistency of its production.

This exchange was not exceptional, but part of a well established commercial and military system within the Spanish Monarchy. Officers, nobles and members of the administration could acquire or commission weapons whose components originated from different territories under the same sovereignty. The combination of a Toledo blade with a Sicilian hilt therefore follows a historical logic fully consistent with 18th century practices.
