France. Antique Model 1845 Sword or Sabre for Senior NCO. Circa 1890

Antique French military sabre, regulation Model 1845, for a Senior NCO, a piece of elegant lines and balanced proportions that perfectly reflects the functional aesthetic of 19th century French military weaponry. It is a sabre with a straight blade, a less common feature within the general typology of sabres, which gives the piece personality and appeal within the field of militaria collecting.

The hilt is made of gilt brass, with a wraparound guard of curved profile and a volute finial, a characteristic element of this model. It displays engraved decoration of vegetal and ornamental character on both the guard and the pommel, visible in various details of the piece. The blade is straight, of solid and well defined section, with a longitudinal fuller that lightens the weight and improves its structural strength. Near the base, the maker’s mark can clearly be seen, represented by a plumed helmet surrounded by the letters FDB, perhaps corresponding, though this cannot be stated with complete certainty, to the house of François Delacour & Backes, a Parisian arms maker or sword cutler of the 19th century. The surface shows an even patina and areas of oxidation consistent with the passage of time, which could be cleaned if desired to improve its appearance without compromising its historical authenticity.

The original metal scabbard accompanies the sabre and is in fair condition, showing visible areas of oxidation and general wear. Nevertheless, it retains its structural shape and allows the blade to be inserted correctly, fully fulfilling its function. These signs of ageing are consistent with the age of the piece and reinforce its authentic character as a period military weapon.

Overall, this French regulation Model 1845 sabre is an interesting piece within the field of European militaria collecting. Its sober presence and specific typology make it suitable both for specialised collections and for those seeking to incorporate a historical weapon with a distinct identity.

It is an attractive piece because it is a well identified regulation model within French weaponry. Its complete structural preservation with original scabbard increases its collector’s interest. In addition, the presence of a visible maker’s stamp adds historical value and documentary authenticity.

Measurements: 101 cm (39.76 in). Blade: 86 cm (33.86 in).

History of the Model 1845 Sabre

The Model 1845 sabre forms part of the evolution of the regulation weaponry of the French army during the 19th century, a period characterised by profound military reforms after the Napoleonic campaigns. This model was conceived for Senior NCOs and senior sergeants, who performed intermediate command functions within the military structure.

Unlike the curved sabres of Napoleonic tradition, some models derived from the 1845 system adopted straight or semi straight blades, reflecting the doctrinal transition towards a more symbolic and representative use rather than a strictly combative one. These weapons continued to be an essential element of uniform and military hierarchy, associated with the prestige, discipline and authority of the wearer.

The production of these sabres was carried out in specialised centres such as Klingenthal or Châtellerault, as well as in authorised private workshops that supplied pieces according to regulation specifications. The use of maker’s or inspection stamps was common and today allows the origin and authenticity of many surviving pieces to be identified.
