Fascinating antique Chinese libation cup made of buffalo horn and in very good condition. This beautiful cup is decorated with hand-carved motifs on its surface. The motifs are characteristic of Chinese ornamentation, consisting of delicate, curved borders with floral inspiration. Centuries ago, these types of vessels served a sacred purpose and were used for ritual libations. It was believed at the time that materials of animal origin (such as the buffalo horn from which this piece is made) would react upon contact with poisons; therefore, the cups were crafted from these materials to help identify a potential risk of poisoning. Later, they were crafted for ornamental purposes. The libation cup shown in the photos still retains its mystical and ritualistic character, making it a piece of great decorative power.
