Antique Bott & Walla handheld ophthalmoscope, manufactured in Germany circa 1925 and in its original case. This medical instrument is well-preserved and comes complete. The black mount on one of the two lenses is broken, and an elastic band has been placed around it to hold it in place. The lens itself is in excellent condition. Aside from this detail, the ophthalmoscope is in good condition and could be used without any problems. These instruments are used to illuminate the interior of the eye via a mirror: the light passes through the pupil and the lens, dilating them so that the ophthalmologist can examine the retina as magnified by the lens. The first ophthalmoscope known as such was designed by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1851. The one shown in the photos is preserved in its case, lined with black imitation leather on the outside and red velvet on the inside. It is in very good condition and bears the label of the manufacturer, a company specialising in medical instruments: BOTT & WALLA, MUNCHEN, SONNESTR. 20.
