Antique French Horse Racing Betting Game. France, circa 1900

Magnificent antique French horse racing betting game, manufactured circa 1900 and in very good condition. The game is complete and retains all its pieces, including the flag. This particular piece is often missing from the vast majority of games that survive today. The game is simple: players place their bets in the central cup, and the horses are positioned at the starting line. The side lever is then activated several times until the race ends. The horse that finishes closest to the flag wins the race, and the player who bet on it takes the contents of the cup.

The game features eight horses for the same number of players; the horses are complete and in very good condition, with the original polychrome paintwork in excellent condition. The mechanism is housed in a wooden box lined with tobacco-coloured imitation leather. The box retains its original lid and green lining, which is complete though somewhat deteriorated by age. Around the side lever is a metal plate bearing the embossed inscription JEU DE COURSE (Racing Game) and the manufacturers name, M. J. & CIE.

As attractive as it is unique, this antique French horse racing betting game will be a standout at any gathering or as part of a collection of curious antiques.
