This rare and beautiful 19th-century French holy water stoup is a true devotional treasure. It stands out both for its excellent craftsmanship and for the exquisite taste with which it was crafted. It is a large piece, carefully decorated with solid silver on a hand-carved wooden frame lined with red velvet. The entire piece exudes solemnity and beauty, making it truly one-of-a-kind. The traditional scroll bearing the inscription INRI is missing from the top of the crucifix. Instead, we find an even more evocative symbol: the skull and crossbones. This motif refers to Mount Golgotha, the Place of the Skull where Jesus Christ was crucified. Three silver cherub heads are arranged around the frame, positioned at the top and on the sides. These figures lend luminosity and movement to the central scene. At the bottom is the holy water shell, also made of silver and richly moulded. This piece may have originally been placed closer to the crucifix, although it is currently attached to the base of the frame. The hinged lid is still intact, although the shell has a crack and some dents from use. Far from detracting from its value, these details enhance its authenticity and character.

Details such as the skull of Golgotha, the cherubs, and the hand-carved frames are characteristic of the Neo-Gothic and late Baroque styles prevalent at the time. Today, they are highly prized for their spiritual symbolism, history, and artistic value.

The original red velvet background retains its texture and vibrant colour, framing the silver figures with dramatic impact and solemnity. The reverse side of the holy water stoup reveals a wooden back panel with antique metal fittings, proof of its authenticity.
