Our Lady of Sorrows, Italian School, oil on panel, circa 16801720

This delicate work depicts Our Lady of Sorrows, painted in oil on solid wood panel and dated to the late 17th or early 18th century. The Virgin is shown seated, absorbed in her sorrow, holding a crown of thorns in her left hand, while with her right hand she touches her chest, where the hilt of a sworda traditional symbol of her sufferingpeeks out discreetly. The oval format and intimate composition invite serene contemplation and devotion.

The Virgins face, rendered with subtle gradations of light, conveys deep compassion without resorting to drama, recalling the stylistic language of the works of Guido Reni, a leading figure of the Bolognese Baroque. The colour palette skilfully combines the beige-brown tones of the tunic with the deep blue of the cloak and the white of the veil, achieving a highly harmonious visual effect. In the background, a barely sketched landscape is suggested, in which a solitary cross stands out, a symbol of Christs sacrifice.

Guido Reni, born in Bologna in 1575 and died in 1642, is a key figure of the Italian Baroque. Educated in the classicist environment of the Carracci Academy, Reni knew how to imbue his works with an idealised beauty and a moving spirituality, far removed from the excesses of the most emphatic Baroque drama. His rendering of facesof extraordinary sweetness and delicacyand his impeccable handling of light made him a model for later generations. His devotional compositions, particularly his depictions of the Virgin Mary and the saints, spread widely through workshops, copyists, and artists trained in the provinces, especially in northern Italy. These indirect followers, while they did not attain his mastery, helped to perpetuate his stylistic influence in religious painting during the transition from the 17th to the 18th century.

The wooden panel features visible knots and vertical grain on the reverse, unmistakable signs of its age, reinforced by the antique craquelure and the oxidation of the varnish, which lend it an attractive patina of age. Although the work is unsigned, it is by a late follower from the Northern Italian school, inspired by the devotional aesthetic popularised by Reni and his disciples. Works such as the one presented here are part of this tradition, embodying the serenity and beauty that characterise Guido Renis legacy.

This oil painting is a beautiful testament to late Baroque sensibility and would be ideal for reintroduction into a liturgical setting, where it would regain its spiritual function, or for inclusion in a private collection of ancient art.

Adding this piece to your collection ensures the preservation of an authentic expression of Baroque sacred art. A unique opportunity for lovers of religious art and collectors who appreciate serene beauty and lived history.
