Antique Gilded Silver Chalice with Paten, Italy or Spain, circa 1940
Elegant liturgical set composed of a chalice and paten, handcrafted in solid silver with fine Baroque-style repoussé and gilt interior. This exceptional piece comes from a specialized artisanal workshop, likely Spanish or Italian, active around the 1940s. Its excellent condition and strong visual presence make it a notable piece for both collectors and contemporary ecclesiastical use.
The chalice features a classic silhouette, with a broad and sturdy base adorned with acanthus leaves, wheat stalks, grape clusters, and vegetal scrolls evoking Eucharistic symbolism. The stem, with a gracefully bulbous knop, allows for a comfortable and firm grip during the celebration. The bell-shaped cup has a luminous gilt interior, strictly following liturgical norms, offering both protection for the consecrated wine and a visually striking appearance. The repoussé technique applied across the chalice demonstrates precise, detailed artisanal execution, with deep relief, careful symmetry, and balanced decoration.
On the underside, the fastening screw bears the hallmark "800", indicating silver of 800 thousandths, a standard frequently used in 20th-century Italian silverwork, though also found in some Spanish workshops. This stamp clearly attests to the quality and authenticity of the piece.
The paten, also made of solid silver and entirely gilded, has a classic form and smooth surface, free from additional decoration, highlighting its functionality and simplicity. Spanish hallmarks are clearly visible on the reverse, certifying the purity of the metal. Its visual lightness contrasts elegantly with the robust weight of the chalice, creating a balanced ensemble.
In the 20th century, especially between the 1930s and 1950s, religious silversmith workshops in Italy, Spain, and France kept the Baroque tradition alive, using techniques such as repoussé, chasing, and interior gilding. Chalices from this era were often made in sterling silver, usually bearing national or purity hallmarks like the “800” commonly used in Italy. These pieces were crafted in deeply liturgical contexts, where beauty and reverence were essential to the rite. Motifs of wheat, grapes, and acanthus leaves are not merely decorative. They represent the Eucharist, consecrated bread and wine, and divine glory. In Spain, religious silverwork production remained vibrant in traditional workshops, many linked to monastic communities or artisan cooperatives.
Both the chalice and paten are in excellent condition, with no significant wear or deformation. The silver retains a beautiful period patina, enhancing its historical value and authenticity. This is a non-industrial set, clearly crafted in a specialized workshop, as shown by the metal’s weight, the solidity of its construction, and the richness of the ornamentation.
A perfect piece for use in parishes or chapels, especially for solemn celebrations, and highly recommended for collectors of sacred art or lovers of religious silverwork. Its impressive presence and meticulous craftsmanship give it lasting value. It is a cult object that unites devotion, history, and art.
Perfect for reintroduction into Church use or for liturgical celebration in a parish.
