Exceptional Antique Silver Chalice by Antonio Martínez. Madrid, 1758. 18th C.

Exceptional Spanish liturgical chalice in solid silver accompanied by its paten, liturgical spoon and original case, made in Madrid in 1758 by the silversmith Antonio Martínez. This is a set of enormous importance due to its quality, its age and, above all, because it still preserves all its original elements together, something extremely unusual in 18th century liturgical pieces. The silver retains a clean and brilliant appearance, with very rich decoration combining relief work, engraving and smooth polished areas of great visual effect.

The chalice displays a classic and very balanced structure, with a wide circular base, moulded stem and bell-shaped cup with gilt interior. The base is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular parts of the ensemble because of the richness and quality of its decorative work. Its entire surface is completely engraved and chased, alternating highly polished bright areas with matte sections that create a highly elegant visual contrast and help emphasize the depth of the reliefs.

Distributed around the base are several oval relief medallions dedicated to the Passion of Christ. Among them can be seen various symbols and instruments of the martyrdom, including the Crucifixion, the crown of thorns, the nails, the ladder, the spear and the sponge. The reliefs are executed with enormous precision and retain magnificent definition, especially visible in the small figurative scenes and the beaded borders surrounding each medallion. The decoration has strong visual presence without appearing heavy, thanks to the balance between the religious scenes and the remaining ornamental engravings.

Between the medallions appears exceptionally rich and varied vegetal decoration executed with great delicacy. Rather than a repetitive generic motif, the design includes clearly identifiable flowers such as roses, bluebells and poppies, accompanied by leaves and intertwined stems engraved with extraordinary detail. This floral work adds naturalism and movement to the entire base and demonstrates artisanal quality far superior to the norm. The contrast between the smooth surfaces and the fine vegetal engraving gives the decoration greater depth and changing reflections as the light strikes the silver, further reinforcing the monumental and elegant presence of the chalice.

The stem continues the same ornamental richness. The central knop incorporates winged cherub heads in relief, surrounded by finely engraved vegetal motifs. The quality of the chasing is especially visible in the definition of the faces, wings and leaves, which provide volume and depth to the ensemble. The piece does not appear confusingly overloaded. On the contrary, each area is carefully organized and helps guide the eye through the decoration.

The cup is another of the most remarkable areas of the chalice and concentrates much of its ornamental and symbolic richness. The lower section is worked in relief with highly elaborate decoration alternating religious medallions, bunches of grapes and wheat ears, classic Eucharistic symbols here treated with particularly refined quality. The composition is extremely well balanced and allows the decoration to flow continuously around the cup without empty spaces or mechanically repeated elements.

The oval medallions display clearly recognizable religious figures executed with great detail. Among them appear Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saint Peter, the latter accompanied by his traditional attributes, the keys and the rooster. The faces retain excellent definition and display delicate modelling, especially visible in the facial expressions, the folds of the garments and the radiating halos surrounding the figures. The entire ensemble possesses highly attractive depth thanks to the contrast between the matte reliefs and the smooth bright silver surfaces.

Between the medallions develop clusters of grapes, leaves and wheat ears executed with great naturalism, adding movement and visual richness to the decoration. The manner in which the vegetal elements frame the religious scenes recalls the finest examples of 18th century Spanish liturgical silverwork, where balance between ornamentation and symbolism was fundamental. In addition, the smooth upper section of the cup creates a highly elegant contrast with the lower decoration, allowing the chased areas to stand out even more when light reflects upon the silver. The interior retains its original gilding, creating a particularly beautiful combination between the warm tone of gold and the silver brilliance of the exterior.

The paten forms part of the original set and maintains a much more sober and functional aesthetic than the exuberant decoration of the chalice. Its surface is smooth and clean, allowing the brilliance of the silver to stand out and reinforcing the contrast with the ornamental richness of the remaining pieces. Even so, it preserves the same hallmarks and marks as the chalice, including those corresponding to the silversmith Antonio Martínez, the city of Madrid and the date 1758, confirming beyond any doubt that it was made together with the chalice from the beginning.

The liturgical spoon is another especially interesting aspect of the set. These secondary pieces were very easily lost over time, even in important chalices, which makes it extremely rare to find examples still retaining their original period spoon. In this case, moreover, the spoon preserves the same hallmarks and clearly belongs to the original ensemble, something even less common. Everything indicates that the chalice, paten, spoon and case have remained together since the moment of their manufacture, without later separations or replacements, a truly exceptional circumstance in an 18th century liturgical piece.

The original case also deserves special mention in its own right. It was custom-made in embossed leather during the 18th century and still preserves its red suede-lined interior. Its state of preservation is extraordinarily good for a piece of this age, especially considering that original cases are usually found heavily deteriorated or have disappeared entirely over the centuries. The case alone already constitutes a rare and highly sought-after piece within the field of sacred art and antique religious silverwork collecting. In addition to perfectly protecting the ensemble, it provides authenticity, historical context and very significant added value to the chalice.

The overall condition is excellent. No major deformations or significant damage can be seen, and the reliefs retain very good definition. The complete ensemble is offered, consisting of chalice, paten, spoon and original case.

This is a highly important piece for a collection of Spanish religious silverwork, both because of its age and the extraordinary quality of its silver craftsmanship. The depth of the reliefs, the precision of the engravings and the richness of the iconography make the chalice spectacular when viewed closely, continuously revealing small details in every decorated area. Furthermore, the fact that the paten, spoon and original case remain complete greatly increases its importance and rarity.

It would also be an exceptional piece for a priest or for someone about to be ordained, not only because of its authenticity and beauty, but because it remains a chalice fully suitable for genuine liturgical use. More than a simple antique object, it is an ensemble with its own history that has remained together since 1758 and may continue accompanying the celebration of the Eucharist for many more years. It is easy to imagine it being passed from generation to generation within a family or religious community, preserving alive its original function and the profound meaning for which it was created: to serve in the celebration of the Eucharist and continue praising the name of God.
