Vintage Meneses Chalice in Silver-Plated Metal with Gilt Cup, circa 1970, Spain

Beautiful vintage chalice by the Meneses house, made in Spain around 1970, with a sober design and an elegant appearance. It is a simple piece, the kind that is appreciated precisely for its clean lines and functional air, with a balanced silhouette and a dignified presence. The engraved cross on the base provides that discreet devotional detail that completes the whole very well, while the gilt cup creates a very attractive contrast with the silvered exterior.

It is made of silver-plated metal, with a gilt interior to the cup, a classic combination in this type of liturgical piece. On the base it retains the Meneses house signature, together with the silver-plated indication and the 40M reference, a detail that reinforces its interest as a piece of 20th-century Spanish religious metalwork. It is a very simple chalice, but that is precisely where much of its appeal lies, without unnecessary ornamentation.

The condition is very good. It retains a very good overall appearance and the gilt interior looks especially good, giving the whole greater visual quality. The silver-plating appears well kept and the piece preserves a clear, fresh and highly decorative look within its sobriety. It is clear that this is a well-resolved chalice, designed to fulfil its function with dignity and with a discreet yet appealing aesthetic.

The Meneses signature also adds a special point of interest. It was a very well-known house in Spain and worked extensively in religious metalwork, so this is a piece that fits very well both in a sacred art collection and for dignified liturgical use, a private chapel, or as a gift for a priest. It can also be a very beautiful option for someone who values old religious objects with good presentation and easy decorative appeal.

A piece that stands out precisely for its sobriety and simplicity, for its good preservation and for the reassurance conveyed by a well-known name within Spanish religious production. It has that discreet beauty that grows on you over time and that fits naturally into a good collection, a private chapel, or as a gift for someone who knows how to appreciate religious objects with dignity, history and presence.

History of the Meneses house

The Meneses house holds a recognised place within the history of silver-plated metal in Spain. Academic bibliography identifies Leoncio Meneses as the founder of the Great National Silver-Plated Metal Factory, which places the firm as an important reference within this field. The present-day continuity of CMeneses also presents itself as the heir to a craft handed down since 1840, a date that helps explain the long-standing presence of the surname in Spanish metalwork.

Historical documentation also confirms the early presence of the brand. In the Gaceta de Madrid of 1880 there is already a reference to Leoncio Meneses and to the silvered white metal known as Plata Meneses, a sign that the commercial name was already well established in the 19th century. That presence explains why Meneses pieces still appear today in different areas, from tableware to religious metalwork and objects linked to worship.

Within the sacred field, the name Meneses is especially familiar in Spain because the firm produced and restored a large amount of religious work. For that reason, its mark is frequently associated with chalices, monstrances, crowns, votive lamps and other liturgical pieces. In an example such as this, the signature provides a recognisable context and a clear Spanish commercial provenance within silver-plated metal.
