Antique French Ivory Sculpture of the Three Graces. France, 1850–1890

Magnificent and refined figurative sculpture in the round, hand-carved in natural elephant ivory, representing the famous Three Graces or Charites, goddesses of Greco-Roman mythology associated with beauty, charm, fertility, and nature. This piece, dated to the second half of the 19th century and of French origin, is presented in exceptional condition and is entirely made of ivory, including both the figures and the base, enhancing its value as a collectible object.

The circular composition, with elegant dynamism and perfect harmony, invites observation from every angle. The three figures embrace in a scene of unity and tenderness, naturally conveying the serenity of their expressions and the grace of their movements. The carving is particularly delicate in anatomical details, carefully sculpted curly hair, the softness of textures, and the subtle folds of the drapery that partially covers their bodies. The polished surface gives it a silky, warm, and even patina—an unmistakable sign of antique ivory expertly worked.

Such sculptures, typically commissioned by cultured collectors or produced in specialized French workshops, reflect the symbolic and decorative taste of the 19th century, in full revival of the classical ideal. The iconography of the Three Graces was widely popular during Neoclassicism and Romanticism, appreciated for its aesthetic and symbolic power: they represent beauty, the gift of pleasing, and generosity—virtues adorning both muses and human works.

The sculpture rests on an oval-shaped, stepped ivory pedestal, also polished, which adds visual stability and elevates the ensemble with elegance. The technical execution reveals an expert hand, capable of bringing life to such a noble and demanding material as ivory. Its excellent preservation, with no cracks, breaks, or restorations, increases both its artistic and heritage value.

Includes an official certificate issued by the Spanish Federation of Antique Dealers, signed by expert José Ferrer Martí (Certificate No. B00666), attesting that this work was made before 1947 in accordance with CITES regulations, guaranteeing the legality of its ownership and trade within the European Union.

The Three Graces, also known as the Charites in Greek mythology, were daughters of Zeus and the Oceanid Eurynome. Their names were Aglaea (the radiant), Euphrosyne (joy), and Thalia (the blooming), and they personified beauty, charm, and fertility. These deities symbolized the virtues that embellish people and their deeds and traditionally accompanied Aphrodite, Apollo, or the Muses in classical mythology.

Their artistic representation dates back to Antiquity, from Pompeian frescoes to Roman sculptures, and was revived during the Renaissance, as seen in Botticelli’s famous painting La Primavera. In 18th- and 19th-century Neoclassicism, the Three Graces experienced a true iconographic revival, becoming a favorite subject for sculptors and painters. Their typical arrangement, embraced in a circle, symbolizes harmony, unity, and the eternal cycle of giving, receiving, and returning.

Sculptors such as Antonio Canova immortalized the theme in marble, and his influence spread across Europe, particularly in France, where sculptures in marble, bronze, and ivory of the highest quality were produced. Ivory versions, due to the technical difficulty and noble nature of the material, were considered luxury objects reserved for elite clientele. Today, these pieces not only preserve their historical and artistic value but are increasingly appreciated as testaments to European craftsmanship and the classical ideal in sculpture.

An exceptional piece for discerning collectors or those seeking a decorative artwork rich in symbolism and elegance. This sculpture would be a perfect addition to a classical art collection or an elegant interior, offering history, refinement, and warmth.

A true collector’s jewel that combines beauty, symbolism, and masterful execution.
