French Gold and Garnet Photo Pendant, 19th Century. In Very Good Condition
Beautiful gold and garnet photo pendant, made in France in the 19th century. This piece combines its intrinsic beauty with its age and the value of the materials from which it is crafted, thus creating a jewel of exceptional quality. The pendant is crafted from 18-karat gold and is hallmarked. It is in excellent condition, with all original parts, settings, and stones intact. Oval in shape, the pendant is decorated around its entire perimeter with sinuous, symmetrical scrollwork, and its front is openwork. It features a total of eight smaller garnets and one large garnet on the front. With their deep red hue, these stones create a beautiful contrast with the bright, luminous yellow color of the precious metal.
The pendant can be opened, and inside, an oval compartment provides space to insert a photograph. The upper ring, designed to hold a chain so the piece can be worn around the neck, is also finely engraved with relief patterns on its front. The pendant features an 18K French gold hallmark in the shape of an eagle's head. All parts of the piece are made of gold, from the pendant itself to the ring and the clasp. The metal is displayed in all its splendor-shiny and pristine, with no dents or missing parts.
Photo pendant necklaces were very popular in the past, allowing wearers to keep images of their loved ones close to them. They were also known as "hair keepsakes," as sometimes a lock of the beloved's hair was preserved inside. There were even designs that featured a small fabric pad inside, onto which drops of perfume were applied. Without a doubt, this pendant is a delicate antique of great beauty and value, which is still perfect for adorning a lady's neck or standing out in a large collection of antique jewelry.
