Exquisite Antique Carriage or Desk Clock. France, Circa 1900

Exquisite antique carriage or desk clock, manufactured in France circa 1900 and in excellent condition. The clock runs very well and comes with the original double key; once wound, the mechanism continues to run for over a week. This type of clock was developed in France in the 19th century; the first was designed in 1812 by Abraham-Louis Breguet for Emperor Napoleon. The name carriage clock derives from the custom of carrying clocks of this type in the carriages or stagecoaches of the time; instead of a pendulum, the movement features an escapement similar to that of pocket watches. The top handle also allows for easy transport. They are also known as office workers clocks, as for many years they were a common gift for retiring employees.

The model in question features a design of great beauty. The case is tall and rectangular, flanked by neoclassical columns at the corners and featuring glass sides and a glass top. Through the glass top, you can see the movements escapement; the folding carrying handle is attached on both sides. The dial features a white crown with black Arabic numerals and a stamped bronze centre, with black pear-shaped (poire) hands. The mechanism can be adjusted using the Advance/Retard function.
