19th-Century French Marble Clock with Bronze Sculpture. In Good Working Order
Magnificent French green marble clock, manufactured in the 19th century and in perfect working order. The clock is topped by a beautiful patinated bronze figure on a wooden pedestal. The figure is not the one that originally adorned the clock and likely dates from a later period (20th century). Even so, the pedestal fits perfectly on the clock, and it is quite possible that the sculpture was created specifically for this piece. The clock functions perfectly and retains all its original parts, including the key and the pendulum.
The figure crowning the clock depicts a young peasant, likely a shepherd, accompanied by a dog. The young man strikes a graceful pose, somewhere between dynamic and relaxed, and his face wears a cheerful expression. He appears to be speaking to the animal, which in turn lifts its head, paying attention to its owner's words. The figure can be removed from its position, as it is not attached to the clock, although it fits perfectly onto it. The figure stands on a wooden base designed to fit into the circular recess at the top of the clock.
The green marble from which the body of the clock is made is exceptionally beautiful, displaying a color similar to jade with lovely white and red veins. The clock is in perfect condition; the dial shows no defects or hairline cracks. The movement is signed: on it, we can see the serial number 1539 engraved on the metal, as well as a circular stamp featuring a five-pointed star and the inscription "AD MOUGIN" above it. The clock functions perfectly, just as it did on the first day, and its green marble case is embellished with various gilded bronze details: a series of volutes adorning the top, the dial, and the front, and the four slender legs that support the entire piece.
This is undoubtedly an exceptional piece, of great ornamental value, and whose age makes it a collector's item. This magnificent clock will delight even the most discerning connoisseur.
