Magnificent Map of the Bishopric of the Rhine by J. Danckerts. Amsterdam, 17th Century

This impressive antique map is an original work created in the Netherlands in the 17th century by the famous engraver and publisher Justus Danckerts. It is a cartographic representation of the Bishopric of the Rhine, engraved in black ink on white paper and subsequently illuminated with attractive colors. The map is detailed and shows all the towns and regions on both sides of the river, with a beautiful cartouche in the lower left corner indicating the title and description. The engraving retains its original frame, a fine antique molding with an aged silver leaf finish. The work is in very good condition despite its great age, which is around four hundred years.

The artist who created this beautiful map, Justus Danckerts (1635-1701), spent his entire life in his hometown of Amsterdam, where he produced a large number of maps of exceptional quality. He belonged to a family of engravers whose legacy was begun by Cornelius Danckerts, Justus's father. J. Danckerts published several atlases in collaboration with his son Theodorus, all between 1680 and 1700. The quality of Danckerts's work is evident in this beautiful piece, a meticulous depiction of the territory on both sides of the Rhine as it appeared in the 17th century.

The map is colored in shades of red, blue, orange, green, and pink, which lend it a very special beauty. This beauty is particularly evident in the large cartouche located in the lower left corner, in which an allegory of the Rhine River (the figure on the right) sits atop the pedestal where the scales are displayed. In the center of the cartouche is a stone cube bearing the map's title and description, while on the left, a faun and two figures toast with wine and grapes-allegories of the region's traditional wine production. Above them rises a coat of arms, and above the cube bearing the map's title, we see a large goblet accompanied by a bunch of grapes.

This fantastic map by Justus Danckerts is an authentic piece that all lovers and scholars of antique maps will undoubtedly appreciate.
