A wonderful Vintage Columbus globe, large and in good condition. This unique piece was manufactured in Germany in the 1930s by the renowned company, which remains active today and continues to innovate. The globe stands out for its large size (30 cm in diameter) and for being in very good condition. The surface shows no signs of wear, except for a slight scuff located to the left of the African continent, which barely detracts from the items great beauty. The maps retain their colors, weathered by the varnish and the passage of time, and the inscriptions are in black and in German.

The base supporting the globe is made of solid oak, protected by a beautiful dark walnut finish. The arch connecting the ends of the axis is made of brass and is engraved with a scale showing the degrees of North and South latitude. Embedded in the base is a small, fully functional compassan original from the period and just as well-preserved as the rest of the piece. The globe also bears the manufacturers mark stamped on its underside, to the right of the Australian continent: a black diamond shape bearing the items name: COLUMBUS ERDGLOBUS.

History of Columbus Globes

In 1909, Paul Oestergaard founded the Columbus company in Berlin with the motto: A Columbus globe for every home. Within a few years, the company had grown exponentially and was exporting its products worldwide. The innovations they brought to market dominated the industry, with production steadily increasing. Columbus globes came to be produced in 24 languages; however, in 1942, World War II caused sales and production to plummet. After the war, the company rose from the ashes, and in 1948, it opened a factory in Stuttgart. Production resumed and quickly returned to its former levels. In the early 1960s, they launched the DUO globe, which allowed two maps to be displayed at the same time. In the 21st century, the company once again surprised the industry by launching a globe that levitated in the air thanks to a magnetic field. Today, the company continues to stand out for its innovations and consistent production.
