Fantastic Vintage Columbus globe-lamp made in Germany circa 1935. This highly decorative, original period piece is very well preserved and can be used as ambient lighting. The globe is a large glass sphere covered with printed cartographic panels that allow light to pass through while displaying all the information. At the top, near the axis, there is a slight imperfection that is barely noticeable. However, this detail makes transporting the item quite delicate, so we recommend picking it up directly at our store.

The base supporting the globe is made of solid beech wood, finished with a beautiful mahogany-colored stain. Inside is the wiring, which has been replaced to ensure the lamp functions perfectly. The rest of the parts that make up the item are original from the 1930s, including the aluminum graduated scale that allows you to determine the north and south latitude of every point on the planet. At the base of the stand, there is a small compass embedded in the wood, which is very well preserved and in perfect working order. The globe is stamped with the manufacturers name, COLUMBUS, and the model number: Modell 200.

History of Columbus Globes

In 1909, Paul Oestergaard founded the Columbus company in Berlin with the motto: A Columbus globe for every home. Within a few years, the company had grown exponentially and was exporting its products worldwide. The innovations they brought to market dominated the industry, with production steadily increasing. Columbus globes came to be produced in 24 languages; however, in 1942, World War II caused sales and production to plummet. After the war, the company rose from the ashes, and in 1948, it opened a factory in Stuttgart. Production resumed and quickly returned to its former levels. In the early 1960s, they launched the DUO globe, which allowed two maps to be displayed at the same time. In the 21st century, the company once again surprised the industry by launching a globe that levitated in the air thanks to a magnetic field. Today, the company continues to stand out for its innovations and consistent production.
