Telescopic Light Concentrator for Microscope. Good Condition. 19th Century

The instrument shown in these photographs is a light concentrator, used to focus beams of light onto samples and specimens to be viewed under antique microscopes. These devices were essential in the days when microscopes did not have lighting systems built into their structure. Made of brass, the concentrator consists of a vertical telescopic mast that allows for height adjustment. The mast rises from a circular base, and the rod that holds the lens is attached to its upper end. The lens is of the plano-convex type, and to use the device, the user must focus the light beam onto it and direct it toward the desired point. If you wish to concentrate the light onto the microscope's mirror, you must rotate the lens so that the convex side faces the light source and the flat side faces the area to be illuminated. However, if the goal is to obtain a highly concentrated beam directed straight at the object to be observed, then the convex side of the lens must be focused toward the object and the flat side toward the light source.

Its excellent condition and attractive design make this light concentrator a very interesting piece for lovers of scientific antiques.
