Set of Military Epaulets from the Second Republic Era. Spain, 193139

Rare set of military epaulets for an artillery officer, in very good condition and authentic to the period. The epaulets date from the era of the Second Spanish Republic and have survived in superb condition. They are made of gilded brass on a red felt base, with embossed silver appliqués depicting symbols and coats of arms. On the back, they feature a brass pin with a clasp, designed to secure the epaulets to the shoulder of the wearers uniform.

Epaulets are military insignia made of various metals and fabrics that are attached to the shoulders of uniforms. Some models are adorned with a series of fringes called canelones, which cover the upper part of the sleeve. The ones shown in these images belong to the uniform of a Spanish Army artillery officer. The period during which these epaulets were made and awardedthe Second Republicspanned from 1931 (the year King Alfonso XIII abdicated) to 1939 (when the Civil War ended). The Second Republic was established following the period known as the Provisional Government (AprilDecember 1931), during which the Constitution was adopted.

The epaulets are decorated with silver-plated metal appliqués affixed to a brass base. The larger appliqués depict the coat of arms characteristic of the period, featuring the coats of arms of Castile, León, Catalonia, and Navarre, as well as the motto PLUS ULTRA. Above the coat of arms is a crown formed by a wall with four towers. Also engraved on the brass is a circular seal featuring two crossed cannons, a crown, and a pile of cannonballs: this seal identifies the artillery corps.
