Antique Artillery Officers Epaulets. Alfonso XIII era. Circa 1900

Pair of military uniform epaulets for an artillery officer, antique and very well preserved. These original accessories date from the reign of Alfonso XIII (18861931) and are authentic collectors items, original and in very good condition. The epaulets are made of gilded brass on a red felt base, with silver-plated and brass appliqués. On the back, they feature a pin with a button designed to fasten them to the shoulder of the wearers uniform. All the components of the epaulets are original period pieces.

As mentioned, the epaulets belonged to an artillery officer in the army of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The reign of this monarch, also known as The African, lasted from his birth in 1886 until the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931. The term epaulettes refers to the military insignia worn on the shoulders of a uniform, whose distinctive markings, material, or fringed edges identify the wearers rank. Today, they are reserved for dress uniforms. The ones shown in the image stand out for the attractive sheen of the gilded brass and the beautiful metallic motifs that adorn them.

On each epaulet, we can see two silver-plated details: the royal crown and a beautiful filigree motif consisting of bars, scrolls, and intertwined swords. The brass is also engraved with a circular seal featuring two crossed cannons, a crown, and a pile of cannonballs, which identifies the artillery corps. The ends of the widest part of each epaulet are decorated with a raised brass motif depicting a branch with leaves and fruit. Both pieces stand out for this meticulous and symbolic decoration, which creates a delicate and understated ensemble.

Perfect for completing a fine collection of military antiques, these epaulets will shine in a display case alongside other unique and historic pieces.
