This intriguing and attractive military inclinometer, made of black-lacquered brass, was manufactured in 1940 by the British firm Hall Bros., and it still works just as well today as it did on the first day. The inclinometer retains all its parts: the telescope, the three spirit levels, the arc with a vertical scale, and the vernier-type angle gauge, which can be read through a magnifying glass. It also retains the horizontal base, which features a fold-out parallel ruler. The instrument is in good condition. Although the black lacquer on the base is somewhat worn, it can be restored; however, the signs of use and age lend authenticity and charm to this type of antique.

Inclinometers were instruments used to measure the firing angle of cannons, onto which they were mounted before firing. They could be described as the sighting devices for these weapons. Most likely, this inclinometer was used during World War II. Engraved on the base of the device is an inscription with the manufacturer's mark and the year of manufacture: HALL BROs, PURLEY WAY, CROYDON - 1940. The serial number is also visible: No. 40499, marked by a large white arrow. The sight, the objective lens, and the rack-and-pinion focusing mechanism are in good condition, allowing the inclinometer to be operated smoothly; the telescope and the arc with the scale can be rotated up to 360°.

The longer spirit level is located at the top of the instrument and has a movable mirror above it. There is another, shorter level next to the column supporting the telescope, and a round one at the base. The inclinometer comes in its original mahogany case, on which there is another silver-plated metal plate bearing an inscription in black letters that lists the company's name, location, and field of specialization ("surveying instruments-optical manufacturers"; that is, measuring instruments and manufacturers of optical equipment). The company name, the year, and the serial number, as well as the arrow, are also engraved on the wooden lid. The case is in good condition and retains its metal clasps, as well as the green felt interior lining and the wooden interior supports. This is an attractive military artifact, with many years and a rich history behind it, combining aesthetic appeal with thoughtful functionality. A true gem for collectors of military or optical antiques.
