French Inclinometer, World War I. In Perfect Condition. With its Original Walnut Case

Antique French inclinometer from the early 20th century, manufactured for use during World War I. Inclinometers are optical devices designed to calculate the angle of elevation of artillery guns based on the target's location. These intriguing devices were mounted on the gun and, using a system of scales, spirit levels, and angle gauges, calculated the angle of elevation the gun needed to hit the target. This inclinometer is from the French firm Coppin, as evidenced by the metal plate screwed onto the scale, which bears the inscription COPPIN - 22, Rue Chapon - PARIS.

The excellent condition of this beautiful device is particularly striking. Made of brass, with silver-plated metal parts, some components-such as the central strip of the ruler, the viewfinder, and the objective lens-are lacquered black. The brass and metal are polished and shiny, and both the numbers on the angle gauge and those on the ruler are clear and sharp. The instrument is signed and functions perfectly, offering a clear view and smooth movement of its moving parts. It also retains the original spirit level for checking horizontal alignment.

This inclinometer comes in its original case, crafted from solid walnut wood that showcases the beautiful grain of this fine wood and its rich golden-brown color. The case housing the instrument's body is crafted from walnut planks joined together with dovetail joints-a classic assembly method that provides strength, durability, and exquisite artisanal beauty. The case retains its original metal parts and hardware, as well as the screws. On one side of the case, next to the clasp, the number 374 is hand-painted in white. This is undoubtedly a beautiful scientific antique that was used in a famous and tragic conflict and, for that reason, forms part of 20th-century military history. The ideal addition to the most comprehensive collection of military and historical antiques.
