Prussian Imperial Army Felt Pickelhaube Ersatz Helmet. 1914Fascinating felt Pickelhaube Ersatz helmet from the Prussian Imperial Army, manufactured in 1914 and in excellent condition. The helmet is complete, both inside and out, and in excellent condition. The only flaw it shows is a small hole in the rear protrusion, intended for hanging the helmet on a nail or hook on the wall. This is a minor detail when we consider that most felt helmets of this type have disappeared, as felt is a very fragile material that barely withstands the test of time. Therefore, this is a true survivor worthy of a museum or a fine collection.
Pickelhaube helmets feature the classic metal spike on top that characterises them. In this case, the term Ersatz refers to the model. Specifically, the felt models (such as the one in question) were the first ones received by the German army at the start of World War I. They were issued between September 1914 and January 1915, primarily for reserve troops. Subsequent models were covered in black leather, which was more durable than felt; however, they were not sturdy enough for combat, and in early 1916 they were replaced by the stahlhelm, or steel helmet, and relegated to ceremonial use.
The helmet shown in the photos retains its felt lining in nearly impeccable condition, with no signs of wear, tears, or noticeable stains. The same can be said of the leather strap, which is original to the period and features two brass buckles. The strap is attached to the sides by two metal insignia: the one on the right is that of Germany, in red, white, and black, while on the left is the Prussian insignia (in black and white). On the front, we can see a magnificent Prussian eagle made of silver-plated brass, depicted on the battlefield and clutching the scepter and orb in its talons. The helmet retains its metal spike and the brass trim on the front visor, both in very good condition, and comes with its stand.
Exclusive and entirely original to the period, this felt Pickelhaube Ersatz helmet from the Prussian Imperial Army is destined to be part of a great collection of military antiques.
