Antique French Dragoon Helmet, Model 1874. France, 19th Century

Spectacular antique French dragoon helmet, Model 1874, manufactured in France in the 19th century and in good condition. The helmet retains virtually all of its original parts, except for the inner lining. The plume crowning the crest is made of natural horsehair, original to the period and very well preserved. The helmet shows slight signs of ageing on its surface, though these details speak to its age and historyunknown, but likely fascinating. The silver finish has worn in some areas, but the metal is in good condition and shows no dents or cracks.

Overall, the helmet has retained its magnificent presence and remains a piece of great decorative power to this day. On the front, we can see a gilt metal detail featuring the image of a flaming bottle and two laurel wreaths, one on each side. Above it rests the original period adjustment strap, superbly preserved and secured to the sides of the helmet with metal clasps. The top is crowned by a large golden crest featuring a frontal mask and plant-inspired decoration on the sides. Above the mask, we can see a relief motif consisting of two intertwined snakes. On the back of the helmet is an engraved inscription: A. GODILLOT.

This impressive and antique 1874-model French dragoon helmet evokes fierce battles and a past of grandeur, making it a piece worthy of the finest collection.

History of the French Dragoons

The origins of the French Dragoon corps are rather unclear. Its predecessor appears to have been the Macedonian dimach, cavalry soldiers who could also fight on foot. The earliest records of the French corps date back to 1554, when Marshal de Brissac, Charles de Cossé, created a force composed of arquebusiers who travelled on horseback but fought on foot. As for the name Dragoons, it is thought to derive from the image of a dragon that (supposedly) adorned the marshals standards. Other sources point to a weapon of the time, a short musket known as a dragon. By 1622, the existence of the dragoon corps was already documented; in fact, in 1616, the military writer Johann Jacob von Wallhausen defined them as a corps of mounted infantry, with soldiers armed with muskets and pikes. France created many dragoon regiments; in 1685, Louis XIV deployed them throughout the kingdom with the aim of fighting the Protestants to bring about their conversion to Catholicism. During the Napoleonic era, the dragoons played a significant role and participated in various campaigns, including the invasion of Spain. Today, the French army maintains three dragoon regiments: the 2nd, the 5th, and the 13th.
