Antique French Grenadier Officers Shako, Model 1848. France, 19th century

Antique Grenadier Officers Shako, Model 1848, made in France in the 19th century and in good condition. It is complete except for the pompon, which has been lost over the years. The shako is a type of tall military helmet with a visor, the origin of which is not entirely clear. Some experts believe it derives from French civilian top hats of the late 18th century, while others trace its origins to Austro-Hungarian helmets and hats from the same period. In 1801, it was first adopted by the Prussian army and was already in standard use by some of its troops during the Napoleonic Wars. The shako shown in the images belonged to the French army and is adorned with the eagle from the grenadiers coat of arms on the front. The black felt covering the exterior is in good condition, as are the brim and the upper trim. The interior retains its original leather lining.
