Fantastic Collection of 10 Antique Photographs by the Zangaki Brothers. Egypt, 1890
A beautiful collection of 10 antique photographs, original period prints by the Zangaki brothers featuring images of Egypt in lovely sepia tones. The photographs are printed on albumen paper. They are numbered and labeled on the negative, with inscriptions in French describing what appears in the images. The photos are in good condition.
These photographs are the work of the Zangaki brothers, two Greek photographers who specialized in historical and Egyptian scenes, worked between 1870 and 1890, and produced albums for sale to tourists. On the other hand, albumen prints are typical of the second half of the 19th century. This printing process was the most common at the time, especially between 1860 and 1890. Albumen paper was invented by Blanquart Evrard in 1850 using a technique that involved applying egg white (albumen) to paper and adding potassium bromide to the mixture.
Once coated, the paper was immersed in a silver nitrate solution and left to dry. This paper would then be solarized for several minutes, in contact with a glass negative, to produce the positive image printed on it. The sharpness of the photographs we see here is a testament to the quality of the works produced through this processa traditional technique brimming with charm and ingenuity. The photos are quite large, making them perfect for display on a wall.
Lovers of vintage photography will appreciate the beauty and authenticity of these images of 19th-century Egypt.
