Beautiful Imperial D English Typewriter, 1919. With Detachable Keyboard and in Working Order
Original and attractive Imperial D English typewriter, also known as the Imperial Portable. This machine, a true collector's item, was manufactured in 1919. The model features a unique design that differs significantly from the typewriters we are accustomed to. With this machine, the user cannot see what they are typing; a few years later, the design was changed to allow for this feature. This characteristic makes the machine in question very attractive and original, making it a highly decorative piece of great historical interest. The body of the typewriter is made of cast iron and is lacquered green; it is in fairly good condition except for the inevitable signs of aging.
The front of the machine, where the keyboard is located, bears an inscription in gold lettering above the keys: SOLE DISTRIBUTORS - THE IMPERIAL TYPEWRITER SALES CO. - LONDON. The model name is written at the top: IMPERIAL PORTABLE. The keys directly below are round, with white backgrounds and black letters. All of them are in good condition and work very well. The unique configuration of this typewriter allows us to clearly see each and every component of the mechanism, which is currently in perfect condition. The keyboard is separated from the type drum by the body that supports it; the letter levers rise up in front of the carriage. Behind this part, a folding sheet metal tray holds the sheet of paper while typing. The entire keyboard and type assembly can be removed to change the font used by the machine.
The body supporting the keyboard also features a series of inscriptions in gold lettering listing the numbers of the brand's various patents. The tray where the paper rests also displays the typewriter's name. The Imperial D, or Imperial Portable, was the last "downstrike" typewriter produced by the Imperial Typewriter Company of London. This model was launched in 1919 and sold well for several years. Very similar to the earlier B and C models, this typewriter differed from them only in its straight keyboard. The Ideal Portable was sold in black and green.
This fantastic vintage typewriter will be the most eye-catching piece in any living room or study, thanks to its unique design and age.
