Magnificent antique Chinese tray crafted from solid, hand-carved wood and subsequently lacquered using traditional techniques. This antique tray stands out for its decorative beauty; it is handcrafted and in excellent condition. The piece dates from the 19th century and has survived to the present day in superb condition, with no broken parts or areas of deterioration. The delicate finish of the traditional lacquer is applied over the deep relief carved into the wood: the red exterior extends over a black base, lending it an intense depth.

The combination of these two ancient techniques-wood carving and lacquering-makes this tray a true work of antique art. Its shape is curiously irregular, with rounded, sinuous edges that blend perfectly with the meticulous carving. The carving is executed using the high-relief technique, so that the small figures and elements appearing against the background seem to emerge from the tray and become freestanding sculptures. The tray's rim is decorated with intricate decorative motifs and unmistakably Eastern symbols, set against a background of diamond patterns.

However, what truly catches the eye in this piece is the central scene. It depicts a serene landscape consisting of a series of traditional houses lining the banks of a canal. Among the houses rise winding trees and rugged rocks, carved with great naturalism. To the left of the scene, we can see a bridge being crossed by two figures dressed in traditional attire. On the reverse side of the tray, we can see the black lacquer that serves as the base for the finish, with a signature in ideograms at its center. The rim features beautiful carving with intricate plant-inspired motifs, notably including lotus flowers.

This exquisite tray will be the centerpiece of a fine collection of Oriental art or a display case dedicated to showcasing the most exotic antiques.
