Case with Instruments for Practicing Trepanation. Germany, 19th Century

Complete set of instruments and tools for practicing trepanation, manufactured in Germany in the 19th century and housed in its original case. The set is complete and includes all types of instruments, all of which are original to the period. The instruments are neatly organized inside the case, with each item fitted into a custom-shaped compartment to keep them in order. The instruments, six in total, are made of steel and are very well preserved; all bear the manufacturer's stamp engraved on the metal. The manufacturer's name also appears printed in gold letters on the lid of the case: HAUPTNER, a renowned manufacturer of surgical equipment whose history began in the 19th century.

The history of trepanation dates back to prehistoric times: this type of operation was already being performed in the Neolithic era, involving the drilling of the patient's skull to treat diseases and ailments related to the brain. Trepanation is a practice shrouded in mysticism and obscurantism, which has been performed throughout the centuries up to the present day. However, today this practice is carried out solely as a means of surgical access for certain neurosurgical procedures. The instruments shown in the images include basic components for the operation, such as the trephine, which is accompanied by two crown drills used to create the opening in the skull.

These two striking instruments are accompanied by other tools, whose function we can only imagine. The entire set, as mentioned, is presented in a wooden case lined with a black material that imitates leather. Aside from the wear and tear inherent to the passage of time and use-a feature that lends the item authenticity and charm-the case is well-preserved. The interior is lined with an elegant purple velvet, also in good condition.

This case containing trepanation instruments is perfect for the office or study of a doctor passionate about the history of medicine.
