Antique Metal Scarificator for Bloodletting. Germany, Late 19th Century

This metal instrument is a medical scarificator, a tool used to make incisions in patients skin for bloodletting. It was manufactured in Germany in the late 19th century and has withstood the test of time, remaining in excellent condition and fully functional. The scarificator features twelve small blades that are released all at once when the lever is activated. When placed on the patients skin and the lever is activated, the blades make superficial cuts to facilitate bleeding. Scarificators have been used for centuries to perform phlebotomy, a therapy that modern Western medicine no longer considers effective. The one shown in the images bears the inscription P.A. STOSS NACHE - WIESBADEN engraved on the metal, indicating the instruments city of origin.

Due to its originality and excellent state of preservation, this scarificator deserves to be displayed in a showcase alongside other high-quality medical antiques.
