Stunning Case with Ophthalmic Surgical Instruments. Circa 1900
Antique case containing a set of tools and instruments for performing ophthalmic surgery, dating from the early 20th century (circa 1900). The set of instruments is entirely original to the period and is nearly complete, with only a few pieces missing. However, most of the instruments have been preserved and are in good condition, although they show traces of rust due to their great age and the use of the tools. The set of instruments is very evocative and authentic, retaining all the charm of early 20th-century medical antiques.
The set consists of several pieces: blepharostats (instruments designed to hold the patients eyelids apart during surgery), fixation forceps, fixation hooks, scissors and scissor-like forceps for various procedures, nucleus rotators, manipulation hooks, suture forceps, needles, spoons, scalpels All of these were intended for performing precision ophthalmic surgical procedures. Given its condition, it is highly likely that this set of instruments was used extensively during the time it belonged to a practitioner.
The case in which the instruments are stored is the original and is well-preserved. It is made of solid wood and features an attractive grain in shades of brown. The hinges are the originals and function well. The wood shows signs of age, which can easily be restored by a skilled professional. The interior of the case is lined with red velvet: this is the original lining, in good condition despite its advanced age. The lining features cutouts shaped to fit the instruments, allowing them to be stored and organized in perfect condition.
Authentic and charming, this antique case for ophthalmic surgical instruments retains the inherent fascination of antique tools used in the practice of medicine.
