Hezzanith Marine Sextant from 1944. Manufactured in London. Certified and in Working Order

Marine sextant in good condition, in good working order, and in its original wooden case. This model is well known for its quality and precision: it is a Hezzanith sextant, manufactured in London by Heath & Co. in 1944. The instrument retains all its parts, lenses, and filters. It features a rectangular wooden base with rounded edges to which the instrument itself is attached: a sextant with a triangular structure consisting of three rings, made of black-enameled iron, with a telescope and a quarter-circle graduated scale. At the base of the sextant is a metal plate bearing the name of the instrument and a description of the mechanism in English: "HEZZANITH" ENDLESS TANGENT SCREW - AUTOMATIC CLAMP - PATENT. On either side of the plate is a Latin motto: SEMPER PARATUS ("always ready").

Hezzanith sextants are among the most famous products of the London firm Heath & Co., founded by Thomas Heath in 1820 to manufacture scientific instruments. In 1845, Thomas Heath II took over the company and changed its name to Heath & Co., remaining in business until the mid-20th century. The Hezzanith sextant with a three-ring structure, like the one shown in these images, is probably the most widely manufactured and sold sextant in history.

The instrument in question is well-preserved. The rest of the components (filters, eyepieces, lenses, etc.) are also in excellent condition. The solid mahogany case in which the instrument is stored is also in good condition, with its original handle and clasps. Inside, there is a service certificate listing the serial number L.548, the company name, the telescope's magnification (3), and the date, May 19, 1944.

Undoubtedly, the high quality and attractive appearance of this sextant in its original case will catch the eye of collectors of nautical antiques.
