Four-Piece Spotting Scope, circa 1900. Gilded Brass. Offers Excellent Vision
A beautiful four-piece spotting scope in very good condition, despite its age. This optical instrument was most likely used for navigation and dates from approximately the early 20th century. The spyglass is in good condition, and its excellent, very sharp and clear vision is particularly striking. The lenses are clean, and distant images can be viewed through the eyepiece as clearly as on the first day. Stylish and elegant, the sections slide together easily, and even today it is still possible to use this spyglass to view distant objects. The main lens has a diameter of 5 centimeters, which ensures excellent image quality.
The spyglass has a total magnification of 30x, and when fully extended, it reaches a length of 755 centimeters. The instrument retains its original brass cap, which covers and protects the main lens. The metal is shiny and still retains the original clear lacquer intended to protect it from corrosion. This spyglass was likely designed for maritime use. In addition to being an interesting subject of study and a fascinating optical instrument, this beautiful antique spyglass is also a magnificent decorative piece. It would be perfect for display on a large desk or perhaps inside an antique display case, as part of a collection of technical, military, naval, or engineering antiques.
In any case, the age of this spyglass, the beauty of its understated craftsmanship, and the excellent view it provides are more than enough reasons to consider it a first-rate piece, worthy of the most discerning lover of naval and scientific antiques.
