English Spotting Scope, Campo Nelson, by B.C. & CO. LTD. 1940s. Clear Vision.

Beautiful vintage spotting scope from the 1940s. This is an interesting instrument manufactured by the prestigious London firm B.C. & CO. Ltd. The initials B.C. stand for Broadhurst and Clarkson. The original company was founded by Benjamin Martin in 1750 in collaboration with his son Joshua, and they patented a method for manufacturing brass tubes. The business changed hands several times until Alexander Clarkson acquired it in 1873. Broadhurst joined the company as a partner in 1892, and it was then that the company's final name was established. In 1908, the partners had a falling out, and Broadhurst moved to a new location and established his own firm, Telescope House; however, he wanted to continue capitalizing on the original prestige (and, incidentally, to annoy his former partner), so he retained the name and the initials.

The spyglass has four sections. The largest of these, which houses the objective lens, is lined with brown leather. The instrument is made of gilded brass, which is in very good condition, with no traces of rust. It is a 20x magnification spyglass with a 4-centimeter objective lens. It is likely a field or campaign instrument, perhaps military in nature. It comes with a leather strap for carrying it slung over the shoulder, which is unusual for marine spyglasses. Engraved on one of the tubes is the inscription "NELSON - 20X - B.C. & CO. LTD. - E.C.I.," which identifies the model, the manufacturer, and the magnification of the spyglass.

The view provided by this beautiful optical instrument is sharp and clear. The lenses are clean, with no signs of mold, and the spyglass can be used without any issues right out of the box. When extended, the instrument measures a total of 505 mm. It is, without a doubt, a beautiful vintage piece that will delight enthusiasts of technical antiques, ideal as a decorative addition to any room or as part of a comprehensive collection.

Dimensions: 505 mm long (extended) x 40 mm wide.
