Box Binoculars with Original Case. 20th Century. In Good Condition
Beautiful vintage "impertinentes" or box-seat binoculars, full of charm and in good condition. This beautiful piece retains its original case and was manufactured in the 20th century. Also known as box-seat binoculars or "impertinentes," these items were very popular in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. They were used to ensure that no detail was missed during theatrical and operatic performances when viewed from a box, and in addition to their obvious practical function, they were a luxury item whose level of opulence indicated the status of its owner.
In this case, the "impertinentes" are covered with genuine mother-of-pearl inlays, making them a magnificent piece of great beauty. The lenses are in excellent condition and allow for clear vision from a distance, just as they did on the first day of use. The mother-of-pearl covering the object consists of wide, longitudinal plates that retain their beautiful white hue in superb condition, emitting the iridescent sparkles characteristic of this precious natural material. The lenses are surrounded by a gold-plated brass ring, with the interior lacquered black. The piece located between the two lenses is also made of this metal, as are the eyepieces.
The eyepieces feature two white Bakelite rings, and in the center of the magnifying glasses is a small wheel made of the same material that is used to adjust the focus of the lenses. The item retains its original black leather case, with the interior lined in bright red satin. This lining is in very good condition, having undoubtedly helped ensure that the "Impertinentes" have survived to the present day in good condition. The exterior of the case, made of black leather, is slightly worn but can be easily restored.
These opera glasses are a first-rate vintage item that will stand out in any collection of charming objects.
