English Hezzanith Sextant Manufactured in 1944 by Heath & Co. In working condition and in a mahogany case
Magnificent English Hezzanith sextant manufactured in 1944 by Heath & Co. (New Eltham, London). This is a precision instrument that retains all its original parts and components and can be used exactly as it was when first made. The sextant comes in its original case, crafted from beautiful solid mahogany; the case's stand and the interior compartments designed to keep the various accessories organized are also made of mahogany. Both the sextant and the case are very well preserved, showing only slight signs of age and use. The item is in perfect working order and looks just as elegant as it did on the first day.
Inside the case is a label printed in elegant, classic script certifying that the sextant is a Hezzanith, a true classic in the field of nautical measuring instruments. The brand was adopted by Heath & Co., a London-based firm that began manufacturing nautical instruments in 1835 and remained in business well into the 1960s (20th century). The firm obtained the patent for the automatic clamp in 1910, as can be seen on the metal plate screwed to the sextant's iron body, which bears the inscription: "HEZZANITH - ENDLESS TANGENT SCREW - AUTOMATIC CLAMP PATENT."
The interior label provides further information about the instrument, such as its serial number (M5521), the fact that the telescope has 3x magnification, and that the instrument is dated August 22, 1944, during World War II. The sextant itself is made of black cast iron and features various fan-shaped, square, and round solar filters that fold out. Both the filters and the mirror are original and are in perfect condition. The telescope is made of brass and retains its original lens; it can be disassembled into two pieces for storage in the case. The mahogany case retains its original lock and key, as well as the handle and closing hooks, both made of iron.
This beautiful Hezzanith sextant retains all the charm of classic nautical instruments. Its excellent working condition and presentation in the elegant mahogany case make it a very special item.
