Spectacular antique treadle fret saw with a lathe. This is the Challenge model, manufactured in New York in the early 20th century (circa 1900) by the Seneca Falls Manufacturing Co. The saw also incorporates a lathe/drill and works beautifully, having been fully restored and serviced to ensure this. In addition to being a fully functional machine, this saw is a uniquely decorative piece due to its beautiful early 20th-century design.
On the top of the saw, the arm screwed to the wooden board bears the following inscription in block letters: SENECA FALLS MFC. CO. - NY. This refers to the Seneca Falls Manufacturing Company, which in 1904 was renamed the Seneca Falls Machine Company and is now known as the Seneca Falls Technology Group. Painted on the metal in gold lettering is the model name, Challenge. In addition to this model, the company released several types of fret saws and lathes under different names: Empire, Rival, Diamond, Gem The Challenge model was notable for including the option of a lathe.
The products of the Seneca Falls Mfc. Co. were considered to be of good quality and high durability. Although they did not include many innovations, they fully lived up to their motto: Quality, Economy, Service. This is certainly true of this fantastic saw, which today is also remarkably beautiful and decorative. The cast-iron frame retains its original garnet enamel and decorative gold trim, as well as all the delicate original parts that make up the mechanism.
Given its spectacular appearance and over a century of history, this treadle fret saw deserves a place of honor in an industrial museum.
