Rare Yarn Sorting Scale. Germany, 19th Century. Original Case

This rare scale is a precision instrument used to distinguish and classify different types of yarns and natural fibers. It is a 100% original item, manufactured in Germany in the 19th century and presented in its original case. The scale consists of several metal parts that are stored in the various compartments of the case. It comes with instructions in German explaining how to assemble the instrument and how to use it. The scale is almost complete, except for one of the parts (rectangular in shape) that should be stored in the corresponding compartment of the case, located in the center-right.

The name of the instrument appears in the instructions and on the case: Universal Gran Sortir Waagee. In German, this name means "Universal Scale for Sorting Yarn." The scale is similar to a classic Roman balance, with a vertical rod and a base that support the perpendicular, movable wire from which the fibers to be weighed are suspended. The threads are placed on a hook suspended from the right end of the rod, while at the other end the wire is capped with a metal pointer. A metal plate with various scales is attached to the balance, so that when the threads are hung from it, the rod swings and indicates the type of fiber based on its weight: worsted wool, linen, cotton...

The set of accessories includes a series of U-shaped metal pieces, which appear to have been placed on the perpendicular rod to adjust the weight of the fibers. Their function would be similar to that of the weights on classical Roman scales. When a thread is hung from the hook, its weight must be balanced against a specific weight. The volume of material needed to balance the weight determines the quality of each fiber and, therefore, the type of material (yarn, fabric, etc.) for which it is intended.

Both inside the case and in the instructions, we can see the name of the scale's manufacturer, as well as the city where it was located: Edmun Kirmse - Optisch Mechanische Werkstatt - Leipzig - Neumarkt, 23. The case in which the scale is stored is the original, and its interior is lined with beautiful violet velvet featuring satin bands to hold the parts and accessories in place.

This curious scale for classifying threads is a museum-quality piece due to its rarity and scientific interest. It is destined to belong to the most discerning collector.
