This spectacular item is an aneroid barometer, manufactured in the Netherlands and over a hundred years old. The barometer was manufactured around 1900 and has been beautifully preserved. It works perfectly and is both a practical and decorative piece. The barometer stands out for its large size and the beauty of its hand-carved wooden case. The case is made of solid hardwood and features a rich walnut-colored finish, applied in such a way as to create shadows and depth on the carving. It has a sculptural form, depicting two fantastical fish or symmetrical sea monsters flanking the barometer itself. The ensemble is crowned by a beautiful bowl adorned with leaves and fruit.

Aneroid barometers are renowned for their precision and effectiveness. Their mechanism consists of an elastic cylinder in which a partial vacuum has been created: atmospheric pressure deforms the cylinders wall, which in turn moves the needle that indicates the readings. This ingenious instrument was invented by the scientist Lucien Vidie in 1843. The metal cylinder or case is known as an aneroid cell, a feature that gives the barometer its name. This cell is typically made of an elastic alloy of beryllium and copper. The cell is so sensitive that even the slightest change in atmospheric pressure is reflected on the barometer.

The case housing the mechanism displays impressive engraving, with deep reliefs and attractive shapes. The two sea creatures flanking the device are highly realistic, with sinuous bodies covered in scales and movable fins. They are very expressive, creating a charming effect. The same can be said of the dome that crowns the ensemble. The barometer itself is made of gilded brass, with a white background and black inscriptions and numbers. The words indicating the weather are in Dutch and are clearly visible. Below the barometer is a rectangular thermometer positioned horizontally, which is also in working order.
