Important, Entirely Original J. J. Hicks Ships Barometer. England, 1870

Magnificent large ships barometer, manufactured in 1860 by the prestigious English firm J. J. Hicks. This piece stands out for its imposing appearance and excellent condition. All of its parts and components are original to the period and are in good condition. The barometer functions mechanically, but some of the mercury is missing; however, it can be refilled with mercury to restore it to working order. Even so, it is a highly decorative piece, of great value, and with impressive character. The glass panes that enclose the structure protecting the barometer are also original to the period; one of them has a small crack at the top, but this detail hardly detracts from the items appeal.

On the lower capsule of the barometer, we can see an inscription engraved on the metal in various calligraphic styles. It lists the name and address of the manufacturer, J. J. HICKS, as well as the model number of the instrument: No. 302. We can also see the name of the city where the barometer was manufactured (London). James Joseph Hicks (18371916) began as an apprentice to the London instrument maker Louis Casella, and by 1860 he had already become his foreman. Hicks started his own business in 1862, specializing in meteorological instruments. He was a seasoned entrepreneur who made good use of advertising, marketing, and his contacts abroad. His company eventually employed more than 300 workers.

The barometer shown in the photos is a fine example of the quality of Hicks instruments. Its components are made of gilded brass and glass, while the case that protects the barometer from temperature changes features a black-enameled wooden frame and glass panels. The back panel is made of lacquered wood and has a mirror mounted inside, perfect for reflecting light and making it easier to read the graduated scale. The glass door retains the original brass hinges that attach it to the display case, and it opens and closes perfectly.

As beautiful as it is antique, this impressive Hicks barometer is a piece worthy of a naval museum.
