Magnificent, Very Well-Preserved Nautical Chart Compass. Vienna, Early 20th Century

This fantastic nautical chart compass dates from the early 20th century and was manufactured in Vienna (Austria) by the prestigious marine and surveying instrument firm E. Kraft & Sohn. The compass is made of silver-plated metal and gilded brass, and is housed in a solid tropical wood case. This type of wood withstands exposure to the marine environment well. The compass is designed for use on maps and nautical charts, and serves to determine the absolute and relative course on these documents.

On the compass face, we can see the inscription E. Kraft & Sohn in Wien, along with the devices serial number: No. 1749. The firm E. Kraft & Sohn was founded by Carl Eduard Kraft (later, together with his son Friedrich Wilhelm) in 1823 to manufacture instruments for mathematical and physical research. In 1841, the firm began supplying topographic surveying instruments for the construction of the Austrian railroads. Its instruments were also used by Alois Negrelli during the construction of the Suez Canal (1856). In the 1870s, the company moved to Theresanumgasse 27, where it remained until after the turn of the century.

The compass shown in the photos is in perfect working order. The metal is well-preserved, showing only slight signs of age and time spent at sea. The solid tropical wood case is in superb condition, with no cracks or damaged parts. The beautiful black grain of the wood stands out against the golden-brown background, creating a wonderful natural pattern. The metal hinges and clasp are also original.
