Fantastic Antique Thermograph. England, First Third of the 20th Century

Antique thermograph with a copper case and brass mechanism, manufactured in England during the first third of the 20th century and in working condition. This beautiful device is used to plot a graph of the temperatures recorded at a specific location over the course of a week, thereby determining the average temperature of that location. Its mechanism is very simple and effective, and the thermograph is still in working order today.

Among the set of parts, a small rod designed to press the marking pointer against the paper may be missing. However, this detail has absolutely no impact on the thermographs functionality, which is truly excellent. The device includes a wind-up clockwork mechanism. This mechanism rotates the paper cylinder at a rate of one revolution per week. At the same time, the other metal parts record temperature changes, which are transmitted to the pointer, causing it to draw the graph on the paper as the cylinder rotates. It is a very simple system that is 100% effective.

The brass mechanism is in good condition. The metal shows signs of verdigris in some areas, resulting from the instruments use in humid conditions (perhaps at sea). The copper case that protects it is in excellent condition. Attached to the base is a gilt brass plate bearing the inscription BIMETALLIC THERMOGRAPH MK 3 - REF. No. MET. 1123 - SERIAL No. MO 3230 - S. & J. ENGINEERING (HENLEY) LTD. Furthermore, another inscription is engraved on the clockwork mechanism: STANDARD DRUM TYPE S - REF. NO. MET. 2414 - GLUCK ENGINEERING. The key used to wind the mechanism is also engraved with the words HORSTMANN - BATH - ENGLAND.

Its superb functionality and unique charm make this antique thermograph a beautiful and special collectors item.
