Antique Jules Richard Pocket Weather Station. France, 19th Century

Antique pocket weather station manufactured in the 19th century by the renowned French firm Jules Richard. This curious piece contains an aneroid barometer, a thermometer, and a compass, all three of which are in working order. The barometer has undergone a specific test, and we can guarantee that it works, although its accuracy cannot be determined. The three devices that make up this fascinating weather station are housed in a metal casing, which is in turn secured to a delicate leather case in very good condition.

When we open the cases lid, we find the compass on the left, the barometer on the right, and the thermometer positioned horizontally above both. The compass stands out for its black background, against which the gold letters and symbols appear. The barometer is white with black markings; on its dial, we can see the manufacturers name, Jules Richard. The thermometer, meanwhile, displays the temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Below the two dials, the word TOURISTE is engraved on the metal. The case itself is decorated with fine gold lines on the exterior and is in superb condition.

Its smooth operation and delicate design make this antique weather station a highly evocative piece.

History of Jules Richard

Jules Richard was born in 1848. He was a famous French inventor, renowned for being one of the pioneers of photography. His father, Félix, invented the first metal barometer in Paris and founded the family business. Upon his death in 1876, the company was practically bankrupt: Jules took control and, in 1880, patented a recording barometer that became enormously popular. In the years that followed, the company expanded its production and went on to achieve considerable success. During this time, Richard developed a keen interest in stereoscopic photography, going on to design such famous cameras as the Verascope model.
