Large Gilded Brass Monstrance in Very Good Condition. First Quarter of the 20th Century

An important, large gilded brass monstrance, possibly of Spanish origin. Made in the first quarter of the 20th century, circa 1920, this beautiful monstrance is magnificently preserved and continues to display its exquisite craftsmanship just as it did on the first day. It is made entirely of gilded brass and features ornamentation consisting of imitation stones in transparent and red hues. This decoration greatly enhances the piece, which also retains the glass covering the viril-or capsule-for the Blessed Sacrament in good condition. The monstrance displays profuse engraved decoration featuring delicate motifs in various styles.

The upper section, or sun, features the viril at its center; on the back of the viril are the hinge and clasp that allow the capsule to be opened and closed. As is customary, this section is surrounded by rays that mimic those of the sun. This monstrance is unique in that it interweaves a series of stylized flowers among the rays, creating a dynamic and original composition. The ensemble is crowned by the classic Latin cross, at the center of which a red stone stands out. For its part, the viril is surrounded by a crown of carved white stones that mimic diamonds and lend it luminosity, highlighting this area in particular. Around this crown, a series of lobed engravings separates it from the rays; these engravings also feature small red stones at their centers, similar to the one on the cross.

The shaft connecting the base to the sun features a beautiful floral motif engraved at its top. Just below this detail is the knop, decorated with carved red stones. Below it, the wide base features a smooth area of polished brass that joins the shaft via another section engraved with wheat ear motifs, symbols of the Body of Christ. The curved legs of the piece are also decorated with these motifs. On the base, we again find a series of red stones adorning the piece.

The beauty of this monstrance and its elegant presence make it a piece of great decorative value and antique charm, destined to stand out in the most aristocratic of settings.
